Multiplication Maddness
We recently started working with multiplication and division concepts and have been devoting about 10 minutes in class per day working on our basic facts. In addition to the practice at school, I recommend that some students spend time at home each night or a couple times per week. Recently your child set a goal for improvement and they should be able to share it with you. The expectation for Trimester 1 was that students would know their multiplication facts for 0, 1, 2, 5, 10.
There are two cards games that you can try at home Multiplication Top-it (2 player game similar to “War”. It can be played as an addition, subtraction, or multiplication game. Click here for the addition tutorial) and Name That Number (3 or more players, uses all the operations). Both can be played with a regular deck of cards….and are fun for the whole family! We use the Everything Math Decks at school, but you can very easily take out the face cards, or assign them values for a challenge.
There are also several free apps that we are using at school that can also support your child at home. I like to create folders on my iPad to help organize my apps. Here are screen shots of my multiplication and division app folders. There is something for all levels!
