Digital Citzenship

The past two weeks we have been talking about the responsibilities we have as digital citizens to ourselves, our friends and family, and our community.  Students know private information like their full name, phone number, address, and passwords should not be shared online.  Personal information like your first name, age, or favorite book can be shared online.  Today we watched the following video from Common Sense Media about The Power of Words.

Digital Literacy and Citizenship

IMG_0450Technology is part of our day to day lives now; inside and outside the classroom.  This week a student asked me what day they had Technology class.  I replied, “Everyday!  I’m your tech teacher too.”  As technology plays such a large role in our lives,  it is extremely important to teach students about responsible use.

This year some of the topics we will address are online safety, information privacy, digital footprints, cyberbullying, social networking,  plagiarism, and much more.  Common Sense Media is a tremendous resource for educators and families when it comes to digital safety.  I will be using their curriculum to guide our discussions about digital citizenship this year.  I encourage you to check out their site and have conversations with your children about this at home.
